Restaurant Recommendations

I think most people with Celiac can agree that finding restaurants where we feel safe eating is one of the biggest challenges of having Celiac Disease. Whether the staff has no idea what gluten or cross contamination is, or the only gluten free option available is a salad, eating out can be tough. In my area, I know most of the restaurants and which ones are the best with gluten free. However, when I’m in a new area I research the restaurants and decide where to go based on where I will be able to eat. To do this, I am pretty reliant on the app and website Find Me Gluten Free. By searching in an area, this app provides you with a list of restaurants in the area and rates how they handle gluten free.

Finding a restaurant that you think is safe is very important, but the most important thing about eating out is asking the right questions. If you have Celiac, it’s important to start off your order by informing the waiter not just that you’re gluten free, but that you have Celiac. Then, ask the waiter if the restaurant has a gluten free menu or what the gluten free options are. As long as you feel comfortable after talking to the waiter, you can make your order. Whenever I order out, I always make sure to ask the waiter if they can add a note to the order that I have Celiac. This helps to ensure that the entire kitchen, not just the waiter, is aware that you’re not just ordering with a gluten intolerance or preference.

I have started a blog of some of my personal favorite restaurants in my area and in the areas that I frequently travel to. All of the restaurants I have included are places where I feel very comfortable eating and have a wide variety of gluten free options.
